Vintage at the Vineyards
A gathering of 1983 and older BMW motorcars
May 7, 2005 11:00a.m. - 3:00p.m.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS !
Rain or shine
If you came to Vintage at the Vineyards in 2004, you know what a neat event this is going to be. In fact this was just supposed to be a one time deal, but due to popular demand it will hopefully be an annual shindig. The biggest kick for me last year was awarding the long distance award to afella who drove 647 miles. If he thought it was worth the drive, I know you will. (see the Dec. issue of Roundel for article and pics from last year). Bring your camera!!!
This is not some snooty concours event, but more of a come-one-come-all gathering of people with the same disease. . .old bimmers. Whether your BMW is a frame off restoration, or sports faded paint with a few rust bubbles, you are more than welcome to attend. If you know someone who would be interested in bringing their car, tell them to e-mail me so they can get on my list.
There are a few changes for this year. We will not have the time consuming raffle this year which will give us a chance to start the poker rally at about 3:00-3:30.
The display area will be reserved for BMW's of 1983 manufacture and older. Gates will be open at 10:00 for vintage BMW's. Registration will be just $5 per car, and there is no charge for spectators. Registration will be collected at the gate.
Here's the story so far:
Location is Westbend Vineyards in Lewisville, NC. The oldest winery in the quickly expanding Yadkin Valley wine country. If you are a wine drinker who is coming from out of town, you may want to pick up a few bottles of some interesting wines you can't get back home. For more information about the winery, and directions to the event site, visit their web site at www.westbendvineyards.com The site also contains their address so you can do a www.mapquest.com search. Don't forget to thank the winery for hosting the event. Do not contact them about information about the event. Please contact me if you have any event questions.
WHAT NOT TO BRING: -NO OUTSIDE ALCOHOL PERMITTED-, also do not bring any pop up canopies due to the limited space avilable in the display area.
Door prizes. One FREE souviner event t-shirt will included with your registration fee while supplies last.
Live music. A trio from the Sauerkraut Band in Blacksburg VA will perform traditional Bavarian music.
"Help Create a BMW Art Car" - An interactive display in which you will help turn a vintage BMW into a rolling piece of art. Paint, brushes, etc. will be provided. hey, even Andy Warhol had to start somewhere.
Rally. The rally will be in the form of a "poker run". At each check point you will draw a card. The person with the best poker hand at the end is the winner. Starting at the winery, you will drive on some twisty roads of the surrounding area, and will end up at historic Old Salem. This is not a race. The goal of the poker run is to have fun and enjoy cruising with the other BMW's on hand.
Trophies. The only trophies awarded will be a long distance award (keep track of your mileage to the event site), and a "patina" award which will go to the car with..well...the most patina.
Food. LUNCH: Lunch will be available on site which will include some German favorites. The winery will also have for sale, crackers and cheese, and wine, bottled water, and juice. If you want soft drinks you will have to bring your own.
DINNER: The rally will end up in Old Salem and those wishing to eat dinner can dine at Salem Tavern which has a neat outdoor patio and the wate staff is in period attire. There were a bunch of us last year that ate at the tavern and had a great time.
Tours and wine tasting. there will be tours of the winery (check tour times when you arrive) . FREE Tastings will be available throughout the day at the tasting bar in the gift shop.
Race cars/Trailered cars. Race cars are more than welcome. If you are trailering a car, there will be trailer aprking across from the entrance which will be marked by a sign. Vintage (pre-1974) BMW motorcycles are welcome also.
Hotels/B&B's. I have a list put together, so just ask if you have not recieved it yet.
Swapmeet. Because of the available space, please limit items to a few boxes that you can simply set near your car. No large greasy items like engines, transmissions, bumpers or sheet metal please. If you can simply sell stuff out of your trunk, that would be perfect, and not to mention a little more European.
Event posters will be available again. Copies of last years poster can be purchased at www.sturdyprints.com and click on "more artwork"
Your help in spreading the word about this gathering to other vintage BMW owners is much appreciated.
