The four-speed wouldn't live very long even if you could bolt it up to a 2.8L M30. You need a radiator-to-driveshaft refit. You can keep the diff as long as the 3.91:1 rear axle doesn't make you crazy. So, you might a well find a late E12 528i parts car and get started. Or, you could do something original and find a late E36 325i parts car and go with the twin-cam M50 (or M52).
