Don't forget that the 520i has rear drum brakes and the 528i has 4 wheel discs. I wouldn't trust the little radiator if the weather got warm.
I don't think the 2.8 motor's extra power/torque is worth the trouble. The 325i's engine sounds better, or get a supercharger from one of the Japanese import/wrecker specialists and bolt that onto the M10. Those blowers (SC12, SC14) for early Toyota MR2s, 2 litre Toyota Crowns don't cost much second hand. You don't need an intercooler and it's the easiest bolt on for more HP/torque with mechanical fuel injection, plus you can keep your 4 speed.
