Noisy transmission - diff or box?

Hi All

My transmission is escpecially noisy in 1st or 2nd gear - a definite whine which sounds like a truck or an old landrover! If I depress the clutch the whine goes....

I suspect it's the LSD or maybe the box - are there any clever tests to confirm?

I have aslo been offered a UK M535 LSD - can anybody confirm that they are side loader, what slip ratio and drive ratio these had?
