i also agree, keep it original! my friend has a 520 (2.0 liter/dual carb'd) and it is great. very simple and light car, no power accessories/anything, perfect commuter. my friend is only going to put in a 5 speed and maybe change the rear diff for more ooomph.
E12's are so cheap and you can buy another one, like a 528i. i have one i may sell for $800/900.
