Like you I am no skilled mechanic but I have learned more about cars general and BM's in particular since buying my 528i a year ago.
Definately get a workshop manual (Haynes for preference, there is one on ebay in Australia at present) and try to get a parts car if you have the space for it. It will save you heaps in replacement parts and also labour because you can swap bits yourself and see if it fixed the problem or not.
Enjoy, they really are great cars and is still my daily driver.
