I’m not too sure on what causes this, but my car does the same thing. To “prevent” it from grinding I found two different techniques that help. If you are driving and shift from 1st or another gear to reverse do no let off the clutch while you are stopping. In other words, say you are pulling to a parking space you plan to back into. Pull up in gear, then while you stop, brake and clutch at the same time, then while you are stopped then shift into reverse. It is difficult describing this technique, but the other way may be a little easier. When you move the shift knob left to sift to reverse, let the stick come back to the right just a hair before moving the stick up. After a while you just get a feel for how to shift without making the grind, but even after some experience it still happens, but not all that often. Sorry that I don’t know what causes it, but I hope that this will help you in the mean time.
