Reverse doesn't have a synchro so you have to wait long enough for the gears to stop turning. It shouldn't grind, but clunk maybe, or just not go in if you are shifting from a forward gear while stopped and haven't let off the clutch. You are trying to engage teeth and without a synchro it won't go if the gears aren't aligned and you hit it just wrong. Or if they are off a little bit and you try to do it fast it could make a noise.

Or, if your clutch hydraulic system is weak and the clutch pedal is almost on the floor before it disengages,it may never be fully disengaging, so you are in essence trying to shift with the clutch part way out. Now that would definitely grind.
