You've got the basics. It affects the shift up/downshift points. Tightening it makes it shift up later and downshift quicker. It can make quite a difference in the feeling of the car and it's responsiveness. If it's shifting up too soon, tighten it up some, you probably don't even have to go by the tach, just by feel, if it doesn't feel right it probably isn't. And from you're description it doesn't sound like it feels right. Tighten it up a bit, but small changes, don't overdo it, a MM or two at a time. But tighten it up and drive it and see what it feels like. I suspect you will be very happy with the results.
