Fuel pressure regulator

Dear Fivers:

1977, 530i--What are the symptoms of a failing fuel pressure regulator? This the regulator that is part of the fuel rail assembly (under the intake rails).

I have the entire fuel rail out of the car--is there a test to make sure the regulator is okay?
