The 3.5 is a good match for the Fox 5.0 (302). If you started with a 528i with a worn out motor, and aimed for minimal disruption (radiator, driveline, weight distribution) motor swap for the e12 then you would end up at the same point perfomance wise.
It would involve a lot more disruption with the 302. But, if you had a donor car powerteam from a late 80s Mustang handy then it would be an interesting project. The 302 is probably the easiest ohv V8 to fit the e12.
