from a 733 in my 77 630 (same chassis as early e2), I had to retain the pan from the 3 liter in the Six. The pan from the 733 would not work in the e12 chassis e24 (630). I would think the same would apply in reverse, ie using an e12 pan in an e23 chassis would not work. My supposition is a bit of a stretch in your case.
