There is a square hole in the tensioner arm somewhere (not that good a memory) that takes the blank end of a 1/2 inch drive (blank = no socket), then just twist the tensioner away from the belt. As memory serves the tensioner was very easy to release the pressure this way.

This method might be a PITA with the room you have to work (hence the long flat tool Carl mentioned, but that this he is talking about is basically a long flat 1/2 drive breaker bar, that can't take very much breaking force).
