Before you jump on that 528i there are several REALLY nice E12s for sale right now that you might want to consider. Sean (Kaveman) in the Bay Area is selling his car which is featured in the 2.8 liter to 3.5 conversion FAQ. Look down the board a bit for some posts by him listing all the modifications. The car has thousands of dollars in parts including some of the more desirable modifications and is being sold for a song. I would swoop in on that bad boy if I were you. You won't regret it.
Also there is Russell Moat's gorgeous, silver M535i clone that has made the rounds on ebay without getting sold. It has the big Metric Mechanic motor ($7K motor I think, or more) and a lot of other great goodies. It would be a wonderful car to pick up.
All I'm saying is don't jump into the '79 528i unless it's just such a screaming deal (like $500) that you can't pass it up. There are some well-loved cars from people on this list that are for sale currently at attractive prices.
