I've been very happy with the Bilstein HD shocks. They worked great for 14 years and then I replaced them under warranty for free. I agree with your hubby about the poly bushings.
The BMW hard rubber ones are already pretty good. And, you have to lubricate poly bushings from time to time and w/o grease fittings, it means dropping the control arms. I decided against it for that reason.
And, I think the handling of the car is already better than the driver in my case. In other words, I think a driving school would offer me more than poly bushings.
When you replace your front-end components, you might as well do them all. Here's a list I put together for Jim Davis.
Control Arm Left......31-12-1-108-384
Control Arm Right.....31-12-1-108-385
Tie Rod (L&R).........32-21-1-124-475 (need 2)
Center Link...........32-21-1-108-081
Idler Arm.............32-21-1-115-582
Upper Strut Bearing...31-33-1-101-663 (need 2)
Strut Rod Bushings....31-12-1-123-552 (set of 2, stock bushings)
---------OR---------
Strut Rod Bushing.....31-13-2-202-395 (one only, Motorsport) (need 2)
And, I strongly recommend a stress bar. BMP has them.
