I think Bilsteins HD's with rubber bushings on sway bars (especially if 16" or larger) is probably the way to go unless you track it a lot.
I autocross mine and there are days I hate my poly bushings.
I think your hubby is spot-on.
Having said that, the euro 528i and M535i come stock with a harder rubber subframe bushing (in the front with the big washers) which might be a little sportier w/out harshness
Pricey at 35-40 each but worth it.
