Last time I did one (on an E3 though) I just used the BMW/Heyco 17mm wrench (boxed end one of course) and it worked fine. Those wrenches have pretty thin walls so they're great for getting at things like that. I think I put a pipe around the other end to get more lever because the bolts are on really tightly.
To make things more fun, my replcement (officially rebuilt Bosch unit) died within one day so I got to do it all over again. I guess they had quality issues at Bosch or something : )
However with the DCOE's I just took the third carb off to get to the starter, not a big deal. I also took off the heater hose (I think the one that goes to the block) to make more room as I recall.
With L-jet I would pull the number six and probably five intake runners to get enough room to work.
