drain out of the filter housing unless the housing itself leaks and youd know that by the puddle it would leave. As for the housing itself, it hangs off the side of the engine in a near vertical position, so its not like a typical spin on filter in the fact that alot of the spin on type are mounted sideways and in the case of some vehicles they are upside down, in that case the filter is usually equipped with an anti drain back valve so because of the fact that it "hangs" off the side of the motor it is always full of oil, there would be no reason for a anti drain back valve. But as I said before I aint no beemer mechanic so if anyone else has any ideas.......
