Assuming it is an US spec car, it is a 528e which is a completely different engine with a different bellhousing. So, no, it won't even bolt up. And on top of that it has no provision for a speedo drive. You need the one with a detachable bell housing, and that one can come out of either a big six (M30) which is what you have, or the "baby six" (M20) as long as you have the right bellhousing. You also of course will need a different crossmember, driveshaft, shifter support and shift rod.
The ones that will work are 80-81 528i, 81-82 633/733, 82 528e and 85 5/6/735. Oh yeah, almost forgot, E30 M3 also uses that tranny, known in BMW speak as the 265.
