As Mike says... "It can be done" and it does NOT require special curvy wrenches.
Like MIke, I've removed the starter while the engine was still in the car without removing any of the intake runners or using anything more than patience and basic craftsman combination wrenches and sockets. Also like MIke, I can't remember exactly how I did it:( Perhaps because my subconscious is blocking the painful memories:)
BTW it is really easy to pull the starter off a block once it's on an engine stand. But maybe that's not what you had in mind:)
