Just thought I would give one final update.

Just got the ECM in the mail. Put it in and it lives once again.

Special thanks to Peter and all who helped out. Couldn't have done it without you.

Latest update...

I took apart the ECM and it is fried. One component in it is completely blown apart ( a capacitor I think), and another had the top blown off. That one I managed to push back together but I'm not sure it would still work.

I would post pics but I can't figure out how.

I wonder if ...

When you open the door, the voltage starts at about 5.5 volts (6.5 volts going to the AFM) and steadily drops to zero as you open the door. I was thinking maybe it was how I was checking it that made it backwards.

Also could you check voltage at fully closed. As I said there is a 1 volt drop ...

Yes the L-jet is certainly simple, it really can't get much more basic. I have dealt with fuel injection on various vehicles, and have an overall good understanding of fuel injection, but it's simplicity has been a snag. FI is so complex these days, I was always looking for things that were more ...

I do realize reisitors get hot, but this one looks seriously overheated. As I said the ICM does still seem to be functioning, so I'm going to leave it alone for now.

Oh and thanks for the link, and the continuing advise from everyone. If I was on my own on this the car would be at the crusher by ...

Lenny,

I try not to make excuses, but here I go again.

Since I am extremely keyboard challenged, I try to balance my posts with concise information, but also try to keep my typing to a minimum. I guess I didn't realize you all were mind readers. :D

I have trouble believing it to be the ...

Did you read my post at the bottom of Page 1?

And I cringe at your having used contact cleaner inside the AFM. The wiper board is segmented carbon track, contact cleaner can be very aggressive depending on what you used. Is face still black (that the wiper arm traverses)?
I might hazard a guess ...

I did check for 12v at the injector connectors, but I will re-check it again tonight. It did have 12 volts present.

I am fairly sure the combo relay is doing everything it should. I actually still have the cover off it so I can visually see the relays pulling in.

I think my next trick will be to ...

OK here is the latest.

Didn't have time today to get an injector tester, but a friend told me a peanut bulb will do in a bind.

So the verdict according to the peanut bulb is the injectors are NOT pulsing.

I first cleaned the obvious connectors, checked the single lead going to the ECM, and did ...

That does make sense, but the tach still works also, and I kind of got the impression that same signal went to the ECU. Guess the real proof in the pudding is if they are pulsing.

If it is the ICM, getting back to the other comment about pulling it apart and checking the solder joints.

I did try ...

It probably sat a couple months at least.

I will go get an injector test light and give it a try.

Also on a somewhat related note, I noticed last night that there are rubber jumper hoses between the fuel rail and injector. A couple of these are leaking.

Are these hoses a dealer only item, and ...

Ok first off, thanks for the offer Brian, but I'm western Canada, no where near California.

However I did more testing, and I'm not sold its the ICM. I removed one of the spark plugs and taped it to the MAF with the plug lead attached, and it actually has really good spark while cranking. Seems to ...

Thanks for the reply.

No I don't have a spare module. I sent my son to look for one at the local PnP, but they didn't have any BMWs.

I don't really want to throw a bunch of parts at this thing since he is financially challenged. I was kind of hoping it would just be a bad ground or something.
