Yes You run a nice thick wire from the - of the coil to the black wire that comes out of the fuse box.Do not use the black wire in the harness is too small of gauge

black and yellow is for starter
green and purple is for the fuel pump
green and brown = oil pressure
green= switch power
blue wire ...

m30 harness

From what read you are tring to convert your 79 635 to motronic 1.3 I did that with my 78 530i you can use a auto harness if the car you converting is manual you remove the auto stuff from the harness

sound like your ignition control module could be faulty or check the connector that connects to the distributor i has a similar problem i have 530i but P.o installed the 528i system so the p.o sold the car because it would start sometimes it would not start similar to what you are talking I check ...

bmw misfire

I had almost the same problem i had change everything you said except the spark plug wires and one night it was pitch black and i had the hood open and i could see the current coming out of two wires that were too close to the engine bay and it miss fire every time it happened hope this helps
