Rear konis

Post by ericindenver »

I have some rear koni special d's which koni said are for an 80-81 628csi. Does anyone here know if that is same for e12?

I had (have) the same question for Bilstein Sport shocks. If you check the FAQ there is a list of parts that interchange between the e12 and other BMW models. Almost all suspension parts are the same for e12 and e24 through 1981. In 1982 things went e28 based.

Unless advised otherwise, perhaps based on the weight of an e12 vs. an e24, I'm intending to switch an old set of Bilstein Sports from a 633 to a 528.

If I live, I'll post my findings.

Rear konis

Post by pappentl »

About 10 years ago I moved a set of RD springs and Bilstein sports from an '80 635 to my '81 528i. 150 k miles later I'm sending the sports out for rebuilding and having the springs powder coated again.

Worked for me.

Close, 83 was the year E24s went to the E28 chassis, 82 was still E12 based. 82 was the big change going to motronic though.

Just for fun, the serial number on my '81 (noted on the title) 633, shows a build date of June '80.

Same as in the olden days, when the new cars for next year all came out in September of this year.

No big deal unless you buy something old on line, like before or after head stamping dates, before or after digital clocks, seat frame switch overs,...

thank you for the input here. I'm doing a complete suspension rebuild on the old girl so that my soon to be 16 year old daughter can drive it! Yes, it also needs a new engine, but gotta start somewhere and it still runs! I have all the tie rod parts, springs and shocks (now that I'm pretty sure the rear shocks will work) but still need a few things.

Its been a few years since I have given the car much love and have been out of touch with who is best to buy parts from (like all the bushings and such). Ideas?

Its very curious to me that Koni lists a rear shock specific to an 80-81 633csi if being e12 based they are all the same? Anybody speculate on that?

There is a parts interchange list in FAQ's.

'81, '79 633/635 I have. '79, '80, '81 528i's I have.

Basically all the same components. '81's get a little cheesier, that's all.

they appear to be perfect fit?

Post by ericindenver »

I'm still a bit confused... anybody? No purpose for answering this other than... what the?

KONI USA says the part # I have is for an 80 to 81 633csi

If they are identical to all e12's (which they appear to be), why have a shock with a part number specific to such a limited vehicle?

Oh wait, why is a dumb question isnt it :) ?

It may not be all E12's it's compatible with, 75/76 had a lot of differences, but certainly most. Hard to say why they list it as they do, while not an absolute, I figure if one manufacturer lists it as compatible, the equivalent part from another will be if they say so or not. But it's not the first time I've seen things like that where there may or may not be some oh so subtle difference that is technically there, but doesn't matter.
