Taking things apart: bolts to the center support, side clips, screws on the side bracket. Stuck. Won't come out backwards.
To read it's all hooked to the air conditioning, freon, radiator, pipes, hoses and don't go there without hazmat, gas masked professionals under penalty of $15,000 fine for causing the heat wave.
I don't want to gas myself, or deplete the ozone or get arrested. While most of me thinks the freon left a very long time ago.
Is it all connected to the heater box in the engine compartment ? Do we take it to a shop to get the box out (properly)...because it does have to come out for resto plans.
Removing the Air Conditioning blower box.
I wish I could help, but I don't really understand the question.
In my 1977, the air conditioning unit in the cabin is separate from the heater core. I think I might have read somewhere that this was not the case on the later E12's.
Does it look like this?:

Here is the core with a new expansion valve:

If you have disconnected the inlet and outlet pipes, central 10 mm nut and the two side screws, it should pull out. I just took two out (don't ask) and can send pictures if you'd like. IIRC it is not connected to the heater box.
If you want to be safe take it to an AC shop and have it pumped down and opened (vented) there, it shouldn't cost much and if you still have an R12 system they may want the R12 to sell to a recycle center. Then take it home and remove the ac unit.

If you have everything disconnected and it's loose, but still won't come out it's hanging up on the drain nipple. I don't have a picture handy, but at the bottom, roughly in the middle, there is a ~3/4" drain nipple that points down into the insulation and a gasket of sorts. You need to kind of pull up on the housing to get it clear, then it will come out.
It's there to allow condensation to drain to the top of the tranny and not stay in the housing to get picked up by the blower fan and flung out of the sides when you go around turns.
Can you tell it happened to someone in a Bavaria many years ago.
