Eric-My name is Chris or CP.

Mike W.- Once again, thank you. Sometimes I literally need things SPELLED out and SHOWN to me even when I should get it myself. I was looking for something that is not there and I mickey moused what was put in for the five speed a couple years later. I would not have seen that without the 5 spd diagram which I would not have looked at.

Which lends me to believe that both Eric and I need to check the bolts/screws in the front the shifter mounting plate. I might put a couple shots of ATF in there, but I will think about that after wards.

That mean dropping the exhaust and the drive line? Sounds like it. I'd rather not mess with the guibo at all. Hmm.......what to do. I should get a good look at it though.

I get it now....

Just like Ken B. said.

Take some pics like THans said.

Cheers!

Eric,

I checked mine today and sure nuff', the nuts on the the passenger side were/are lose. I tightened them up some, not too much space in there, but it made a noticeable difference. Goes into second much better and all the other gears are completely smooth now. I think I had much bigger issues than I did, but it also looked like one of the bolts from the trans. had been re-welded in there. I recommend you take a look.

They were 13mm and I used small wrenches and small sockets with extenders and such to at least get some good turns.

Think I could have done a better job when I had the muffler pipes off a couple weeks ago. Doh! At least I know what I have to get at when it warms up a bit more and I am down with dropping the pipes and the drive line.

Thanks again everyone.

Somebody asked about upgrading. My 2 cents, unless you're running a hopped up 3.5 turbo, which would also probably need an upgrade to the rear diff mount, all new box stock parts installed correctly will make you happy enough for years.

I have a five speed box, and my shifter bracket has the four mounting points at the front per the 4-speed picture. This seems to be a far better design.

Does anyone else use this bracket on their 5-speed, or is my car an anomoly?

I've never seen a 4 bolt bracket on a 5 speed and I've seen a bunch. Well, I might have done something like that on a 5 speed conversion on an E24 I used to have that had the mounting ears broken off, that one was definitely a collection of parts I made work. :D But stock, no, 5 speeds I've seen have always had just the two bolts up front.

I was wrong. What I thought was a five speed box was really a four speed.

On the plus side, I now know how to properly identify a 5-speed box.
