Yes, one off a 88 535is will work, it is a M30 engine and all. But you will need to work around interference with the idler and fab some hangers for it. The intermediate ones are easy, the rear one somewhat harder, but doable. You will need everything from the manifolds to the tips of the tailpipe. Also I suggest 6 point sockets for the exhaust, I've rounded off a few nuts over the years with 12 point tools.

I concur, The only issues are the hangers and indenting the downpipe around the idler arm. As a side benefit you get a better flowing exhaust.

Guys, it just dawned on me while I was yanking a exhaust manifold and y pipes off an e23 why can't I just use the M30 exhaust manifold and attach to my existing pipes?

Will that work?

Not concerned with smog right now as I have two years. Main thing is to relieve this heat and get those TR's OFF!

No.

Thermos are a different length and while the bolt pattern is the same it's rotated some and set at a different angle. You could do it if you cut the downpipes, bolted the flanges to the 535 manifolds and welded in an extension.

Guys...

I tackled the job today. It began with removing the exhaust manifold down from the 535is at 9am....that took me maybe 45 minutes?!

That ridiculous thermal reactor job!!! The opposite of PRICELESS!

They are finally off and the e28 manifolds up. I was the last to close the shop up and all the guys left little ole me and the random cats wandering the yard. I am not strong enough to lift the exhaust by myself so it is sitting in place.

Question guys to you whom have traveled this crazy journey prior is:

the pipes go through to opening straight up?
at this point then I modify to allow for the idler?


Looked as if it was going to be trouble going back up...

I think recalls should be the life of the cars!

Appreciate all the help.

Good thing is that this was the only serious issue I was having. After this it should be all easy cruising.

Get ready for double fun. Yes, it will go more or less straight up and in, but in my experience it's much to crowded in there to swing a hammer or anything, so you have to get it in position, mark it, then pull it back out and modify it, then do the full install. All with crap falling in your eyes and working on your back. :evil:

And this has what to do with Nikki's exhaust???

I could remove your post, but I can't or don't know how to move it. Anyway, I don't think there is an easy way. 528i will be harder though, it's much bigger. Remove radiator, unbolt A/C condenser, unbolt fan and work it out. You won't be enjoying yourself.

Thanks again guys.

Here is the update. I went to awesome muffler shop today and they welded it up with new hangers and bent the pipe for me. Sounds like I have power under there! LOL. I believe I did a nice job and the shop completed him right off.

Now I am still chasing my overheating issue. Cooler of course and feels like I do after I push away from the sorbet shops. So much lighter!

I have been told recently by a new repair shop that the radiator was indeed still the problem. I have been cheated by the prior mechanic and a law suit is on the way. Meantime, I am having it removed and repaired correctly.

Will status in a bit...

Bob told me the whole story. You might only need to have it
'rodded out'. The radiator shop pulls it & slides a slim bar/rod all the way through from, I think, both angles to clear everything out.
The shop right across the street from Werkstat did mine a few years ago.
I'll go check the price, but, I know they're cheap.

Just an FYI there is an E28 upgrade should be in the FAQ this should be an easy upgrade since you have so many pick and pulls in your area.
