euro L-jet M90 distributor compatability?

Post by soco »

Hey guys, Reid here. I'm on most of the BMW boards, have 3 e28's and an e24. The 6 is the one I'm here about (it's e12 based).

So its a euro 635csi from 1980. Its the M90 block, with L-jetronic. I'm having a bad bucking feeling from it when it warms up at constant RPM. I'm guessing its ignition related, I have replaced the coil and wires, I'm going to replace the distributor too (its olllllld so even if its not bad its still peace of mind).

I'd rather not buy a new one. However, I have heard that euro mechanical distributors are different than american, and on top of that the 3.5 euro distributor is different still. So I ask you this:

If I have a euro 3.5l mechanical distributor from 1980, what else will work? Can I use a euro 2.8l distributor from a 528i? Or is that not acceptable?
1980 635csi
1982 528e
1987 535i (for sale)
1988 M5

All 5 speeds.

The part no 12 11 1 304 908 show that these would work.

E12 535i Limusin, Europa
E12 528i Limusin, Europa

E23 735i Limusin, Europa
E23 728i Limusin, Europa
E23 733i Limusin, Europa

E24 635CSi coupe, Europa
E24 633CSi coupe, Europa

This part no 12 11 1 270 956 - are E12 528i Limusin, USA

RealOEM: some other part no that might work
