cylinder head torque

Post by jayne58 »

Hi everybody, I am going to put back the cylinder head on my 528i, question is what 's the torque requirement and bolt sequence if any? I tried looking for it on the FAQ but didn't find any. Thanx in advance.

Dab out the bolt holes to eliminate oil. Enough of it can compress and goof the torque settings.

There are fourteen bolts. Find the middle one, bottom row. That's # 1. Upper row, straight across is # 2.

Work from the middle, # 1, across to # 2, then continue to work up / down, back and fourth. I.e., equally toward each end of the head in steps. Object of the game is to keep all the tightening pressures equal as possible, not to warp the head.

Tighten bolts in three steps ( engine cold): All to 32 ft. lbs, then 52, then 59.

See FAQ's or ask about cam gear, Top dead center, gaskets, etc.

I would expand on that just a little, after the final torque to 59, wait 15 or 20 minutes and torque to 59 again. That is according to the manual, not just my .02. You may or may not get any further turning, don't be concerned either way.
