Coil wires pulled off, help!!!! 78' 530.

Uh.....

I accidentally pulled off the three wires that go to the coil leads.

Had the air box off for something or another and when I but it back on, like a ding dong, I didn't pay attention and pulled off the 3 wires that go to the coil.

There's a thick one that is black with a red stripe, another thick all black one, and a skinnier black one coming from the same wiring harness/thing.

They all came disconnected and I of course didn't didn't notice until today when I went to start her and she didn't fire up.

I have the pertronix system set up, and those wires are still on, so I know which sides on the coil are positive and negative at least.

I tried to google, and am about to again, but didn't see what I needed.

any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I tried with the black/red wire to positive side and the 2 others to the negative side and nothing.......

Don't want to keep guessing in fear of frying something.

I went out and looked at mine and I also have three wires but two of them are connected into one clip. The single thick black wire is negative side and the two connected, one black with red stripe and the other just black, are on the positive side. I don't have the pertronix system though, still just points. I hope it helps.

I put them that way and still no go, but I am pretty sure that is the right way for my car too, which would mean I made something else happen when I first tried to put them back on. Doh!

I tested the wires with a volt meter and the ignition on and the thinner one is the one pushing out the 12 volts which means I had it on the neg side with the thick blk. one before I posted on here.

I REALLY hope I didn't mess things up and cause a nightmare for myself. I'm a bit too tired to go into it any longer as electrical diagnostics is definitely not my thing.

Getting no spark at the dist. now, so going to back off until tomorrow probably. I'm done with working on the car in the cold garage thing, and as you know, it's chilly in the NW again.

Nice work on your ride, btw. Thanks again..... Time to google "no spark"......oh joy....

Thank you, I appreciate your input. I would assume, of course, that they put in a fuse for that Pertronix system? I would look at that first. I do have one of those that I took off of a salvaged 79. I dont think that I will use it so if you need it I would part with it for you. It is complete with the distributor and box with wiring. Let me know what you figure out so that I can archive it for my notes.

Scott,

You were spot on. I checked everything for continuity. Everything seemed fine EXCEPT for the pertronix. Pulled it and I fried it.....had a hole in it and when I switch the points back in, it started right up.

I'd be really upset at myself, and I did this when I first got the car a couple years ago.....but, I had a good friend pass away last Sunday unexpectedly and my mind has been else where, to say the least. I should not have been looking at the car at all and made a couple STUPID mistakes. Lesson learned. Wires at condensor are now marked, like they should have been.

The good new is that it seems the car runs better. It went to 1,000 rpm straight away and sat there through warm up like my old ones did. They always went straight to 1000 rpm when started. It's cold, but not FREEZING where I am which was confusing me. I'd been trying to figure out some funky start up idle issues the last few months and it seems they are gone. This either has to do with the neg. plug that was un-hooked from the condensor when the pertronix was in there , or a disconnected/loose wire I had in a relay, the one next to the brake fluid resevoir which I found. Is this the start relay?

In any case, thanks again. You helped make it a very short diagnostic and I am much better understanding the volt meter and ignition system than i was, definitely. So, those are good things at a not so high off a price.

I would be interested in your pertronix if don't want it, but wouldn't you want to keep the spare dist.? I don't think I need that as well.
