I think it's to relieve the load on the ignition switch, so you can have things ignition switched, but not have all the load going thru the switch itself. Safer, less wires back and forth, less load on a hard to get to switch.

Hey guys,
So last night was the first time it rained while I've owned my 1980 528i. I've only had it a week so far. So I got up in the morning after it had been raining all night and opened my diverside door only to find about an inch of water by the pedals and the seat soaked in water. I was wondering if anybody else had been in a similar situation and knew how to fix this.
Thanks.

Your sunroof drains are likely clogged. Get some weedwacker plastic cable and run it down the drain channels, then run some water down the channels to make sure they're clean. The rears drain through the vents on the C-pillar, IIRC the fronts drain into the cavity at the back of the front fender. I don't remember which side the drains are on, take a flashlight to find the one in the rear, the front one is obvious.

I wish there was a simple answer, but on these old cars there are many routes for water to get in. I had a similar experience.

The bottom right corners of the windshield seal is a common leak.
