Looking at pics 4 and 5 it's clear that is just the pickup, not a pump. Try to get things working by replacing the suction hose from the pickup/sending unit in picture 4, 12MM I think or 1/2" if you're in a pinch, then with everything installed, pull the air boot off and with the ignition on, push in on the AFM flap. You should hear a click from the combo relay and it should be pumping, that's how it's switched.

Im picking up a fuel pump from an e30 hopefully. I read some are the same.

Early to mid are the same, late are an internal one and not the same or interchangeable. I think it will be obvious as to go/no go.

Just to follow up, I got the new pump and replaced all the rubber lines. It fired up almost immediatly, but it needs some work. I am building a new engine for it now. I also picked up some rial mesh wheels.

I have a build thread over on bf.c, am I allowed to link it?
