Just to be six of one and a half dozen of the other,...first, your photo, film and report are techno great. Second, your satisfaction with the alternative installation is the only one that counts. It works great, you like it, end discussion.
The interesting part is those blocks are, have been installed on four cars I've owned. I expect all oriented as they came off, if replaced. I'd have to look.
Anyway, twenty years, the stock and short shifters just shifted.Completely off the radar, no problems.
Wild guess: age makes the bushings and rubber in the blocks deteriorate. That's the important part.
