I'm taking out the auto trans. I'm guessing the drive shaft has to come off first, but I'm bit in dark what end to attack first.

Funny, this is one of those things that I absolutely intuitively know when I'm under there, but thinking about I'm less sure. Disconnect it at the tranny, but I don't think you have to remove it, just push it out of the way. Also unbolt the torque converter from the flexplate and push it off as you remove the tranny, it makes it much less messy.

I thought just unbolting the drive shaft and unbolting the torque converter from the uni body would be it. But there appears to be a pin extended out from the transmission into the driveshaft that is longer than the amount of play I can create.

Did you unbolt the center support bearing?

Yes there is a locating pin, almost 2" long, that ensures if your guibo fails the driveshaft stays in place and nothing dramatic happens. But loosen the clamp on the center of the D/S, push it in as far as you can, unbolt the center bearing and I think you can push it out of the way and off the end of the trans.
