At the moment, I'm reinstalling my E12's oil pump. The Haynes manual as well as the parts catalog indicate that it may be necessary to use shims/spacer plates (see 1, #7 and #15) for the oil pump. Oddly enough, when I'd removed the oil pump almost two years ago, I found that only the largest shim (#7) was present.
Can this indeed be the case that there is only one shim? I know it only concerns 0,1 mm difference, but can imagine it would not be beneficial to the oil pump chain alignment. How crucial is this second shim (#15) to the normal operation of the oil pump? Also, is it a necessity to use the shims at all? Further, what would be acceptable in terms of slack/play for the oil pump chain?
Than another matter. I'm trying to remove the bearing bolt (2, #13) of the timing chain tensioner guide. Unfortunately, it's not the bolt type (as the two of the other guide), but more or less a 'dowel / pin' type which is hammered into the block. My question is: how can I extract it? I've already try to heat it up and use a vice grips. Finally, once this bolt is removed, is it possible to just hammer in the new bearing bolt (or do I have to heat up the block in advance)?
Hope you guys can help me out with these issues. Thanks in advance for your time.

Oil pump and timing chain bearing bolt
E12 M535i '80 (currently restoring)
Til the 'Big Dogs' respond I'll give you somthing to ponder. If you only took out one shim, and you haven't adjusted or renewed anything around the oil pump, my guess is that you need only one shim. I would go with this thought because our cars are old & use to what has been there.
I can't help with your pin issue.
Thanks for the updates,,,,Greg

Thanks for your thoughts Greg. Appreciate it. I hope you're right. Actually, the engine may have run for its entire life (or at least probably a very long time) with only one shim. Considering that the play in the oil pump is within factory tolerances (checked it), it might not have much impact...GripGreg wrote:Til the 'Big Dogs' respond I'll give you somthing [..] Thanks for the updates,,,,Greg
