I took the head off to replace a gasket leak recently. While getting ready to put things back together, I noticed that one of the rocker shafts is missing what looks like an aluminum plug in the end. Both shafts have plugs at the back of the engine. On the cam sprocket end (front of engine), the shaft on the intake side (left) does not have a plug.

Is this normal? If not, is this a critical item and where do I find one? Does it simply press in?

Sure would like to get the vehicle back together and on the road this weekend.

Yeah, I had the same thing happen. Those plugs just press in on most e12's, so they have a tendency to work their way out after a while. If you get on RealOEM, you can find the part number which is 11331266400. Getting them in can be a bit of a pain, and sometimes you have to remove the cam gear to do it. You can pretty much just hammer or lever them in. Without the plugs, you run the risk of low oil pressure, and improper lubrication of the cam. When the plugs comes out, they can either go into the oil return drain on the low side of the cam box, or down in the lower part of the timing chain cover. Either way, it's probably a good idea to find it before you button it up.

For the informaton Keith. Part is ordered and my project is delayed a bit. The old one is not visible so perhaps if fell out along the path to and from the machine shop.
