Rough Idle When Warm

Post by Freysmith »

The car starts fine and idles for about 2-3 min. then it runs rougher and will finely stall if I let it go long enough. If I give it a little gas it runs fine. I have looked through the bulletin board archives, and from what I see it could be the air flow sensor, the coolant temp. sensor, or the auxiliary air valve (anything else?). Where should I start first? The person I bought the car from had replaced the O2 sensor, but it is a used part so it still might be bad. This car sat for about a year and a half before I got it. Thanks for the help. I really want to get this car on the road!

Thanks. I am looking for it, I think that I have the right spot, but I do not see this wire. My car is a 1976 530i, is it in a different spot?

O2 sensor?

Post by Robert Bondi »

You also might want to take a good look at what you've got. The 76 didn't
come with an O2 sensor, so the car has major modifications if you actually
have one.

What's the idle speed situation from start to the dying problem?

Sorry, I should have said mass air flow sensor.

It Idles at around 5,000 RPMs

I am sure you mean 500 rpm, that is too low and when your AAV starts to close, it sure will stall. So you might want to adjust your idle a bit higher. Not sure but it might help. :)
