Injector question on '81 E12

I remember reading somewhere in this forum that if you pulled the injector rail with all 6 injectors attached and set up 6 cups to test for fuel flow by pressing in the AFM door in with ignition on to diagnose any bad(plugged up) injector. Is this a good method to check for a bad injector or is there a better way?

My 6th cylinder appears to not be firing and have done this test today but with only the 6th injector out of it's hole (was able to just pull it out without pulling whole rail) and no fuel comes through at all while I can hear the pump and fuel flowing.

I have tested the plug for power(to injector) and the spark plug and wire for a good spark previously.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/confirmations.

No, all that would do is turn on the fuel pump, not fire the injectors. They get pulsed once per revolution, it's not a continous flow. You could do it by either setting it up and cranking it, or maybe by proping the AFM flap open, then with the igniton on rocking the dist rotor back and forth to generate a pulse so the ECU thinks its running. All the while being careful not to set yourself on fire with gas and spark. Maybe disconnect the coil and do that.

I would at least start with a much simpler test, pull the connector to that injector while it's running and see what happens. If nothing, check for spark and compression, then replace the injector.

Thanks Mike that's good information. I was getting ready to order an injector but after I cranked it a couple times after wrapping it in a newspaper I saw that fuel is coming out of it, so not the problem apparently.

I then pulled the spark plug and and sure enough it is fouled up pretty good with oil and I just cleaned it up a month ago so I was sure that wasn't it. I'm wondering now if it needs valve adjustment or worst case a valve job.

Thanks again.

Probably needs valve guide seals. When I recently disassembled an older head they were not just crispy, but several were actually broken. Maybe by my disassembly, but I don't think so.

Yeah it's always something. I haven't driven it much the last 13 years(about 30k miles) but I had a head gasket redone 4 years ago and was told everything else was good so I will just keep changing ignition parts and try to drive it a little more often and see if that helps.

I keep learning more and more thanks to you and many others here.

Thank you!
