Getting an E12 back on the road

Post by Blaise »

I finally took my car for a spin after 9 months of work.

Here are the issues that have come up since I first tried to turn the key:

1. NO STARTER CRANK (FIXED)-as it turned out, I had not grounded the starter relay when I removed the automatic transmission wiring.

2. CLOCK LIGHT ALWAYS ON (FIXED)- When I connected the battery, my clock background light was immediately on. When I turned on the headlights, it turned off. The clock was not working. As it turned out, I had switched the positive and negative leads on the clock, oops.

3. POWER STEERING PUMP HIGH PRESSURE LINE LEAK (PENDING)-I have brand new lines. At first it leaked badly and I discovered that the high pressure line to the pump was only hand tight. I tightened it, but it still weeps. I would like to fix this. Is there supposed to be a crush washer at this location? Tips welcome.

4. STEERING IDLER ARM BUSHING SQUEAK (PENDING)-When I turn the steering wheel I hear this groan. I found it coming from the idler arm pivot, with my stethoscope. I bought a new bushing and will but it in asap.

5. FAN CLUTCH (PENDING)-The fan clutch seemed to make some nose when I first fired up the motor, like a bad bearing. When the engine is up to temp, it still spins freely. I ordered a new clutch.

6. WHEEL ALIGNMENT (PENDING)-I installed camber adjusters at all four wheels and will have it aligned later this week.

Ken,

You are not referring to the banjo bolt connection right? The connection to the pump is a different style.

I will take a photo of the connection. If it needs a crush washer, then my fix will be simple :D

Just curious where you got camber adjustment? They are camber plates, right?

I may not need them because I don't drive my 635 enough to worry about tread wear, but it may be worth looking into.

I bought a set of front camber adjustment plates from bavarian auto, but they are actually K-Mac (street version).

Besides not coming with a suitable dust cap, they seem good.

For the back, I got a set of trailing arm adjustable bushings from AKG.

Besides the adjustment tool, they are very well made.

3. POWER STEERING PUMP HIGH PRESSURE LINE LEAK (PENDING)-I have a feeling that my pump is damaged at the internal sealing surface. I have cleaned up my spare pump and will swap the pumps.

4. STEERING IDLER ARM BUSHING SQUEAK (REPLACED)-I have yet to run the car, but the new bushing

5. FAN CLUTCH (PENDING)-The fan clutch seemed to make some nose when I first fired up the motor, like a bad bearing. When the engine is up to temp, it still spins freely. I ordered a new clutch.

6. WHEEL ALIGNMENT (PENDING)-I installed camber adjusters at all four wheels and will have it aligned later this week. should fix the problem.

Interestingly, of the few things that I did not replace, many have failed. So far, the clutch slave cylinder, brake master cylinder, fan clutch and steering idler bushing. Funny how that works.

Ah, the joys of all the work and the little pains of things that need tweaking.

I swapped out my power steering pumps and it seems to be fixed.

The problem was a damaged sealing surface at the pump:

It should look like this one:

Not sure how someone could have caused this damage...dumb.

You MUST bring your E12 to the St. Paddy Day's event in San Diego. We have a few Nor. Cal. people who drive down for the weekend...I must have a ride in the car!

So how difficult was it to get that little fitting out of there to replace it?

Are you referring to the power steering pump? If so, I just swapped out the pump for the one that had originally come with my car.

As it turns out, the current pump is not working well. The steering is too heavy (labored) and the pump makes a bit more noise than I think it should.

This is worthy of a new topic, for future searches.
