I did not replace the seals on the getrag 265 transmission as planned when I was doing the engine swap.
It was only leaking from the shifter shaft.
Now the redline is dripping on to the exhaust and making a stink.
In addition, it was whining at a high pitch, especially at 60 mph under load in 4th or 5th gear. So I removed the redline and added normal 90 gear oil, with some Lucas transmission additive.
Now it difficult to shift for a bit when cold. But I knew that would happen and the whining is a lot better and it's no longer dripping on the exhaust.
I did some research and working on this gearboxes requires special tools and can be tricky. I did learn that the whining comes from the 72x30x19 shaft bearing. There are two, one at each end.
How difficult is it to replace one or both bearings? It seems easy enough to open the ends. The plan would be to remove the transmission in the morning replace the bearings and seals and then put it back back in the same day. Does this seem reasonable?

I think you're overly optimistic. I don't see it as a one day job. How are you going to remove the bearings? They don't just slide off, I tried to pull an input shaft bearing off a 262 tranny and while I didn't try real hard, was unsuccessful. I got it to move some with heat, but I didn't get it off.
265's have an intimidating reputation, there are claims they have non standard bearings, but I see listings for bearings that aren't expensive. I don't know which is correct.

Thank you Mike. It sounds like what I researched. I was hoping the real hard stuff was just one layer deeper and that I might get off easy.
Is was just about to make an edit to note that I found conflicting sizes on bearings so I would need to measure and then order. There was one post with pictures that made it look easy but then stops after opening it up.

I will need to develop my plan.
