Tie rod removal

What's the trick for removing tie rods, center link without damaging the boots ?
I have the trick tool, used it successfully, but it only worked on one side. The other side was a bear, resisting any quick and easy popping off by smashing the so called ellipse, self clamping, hammering the side.
If the rod were to be replaced, I'd grab a pickle fork. I doubt that will work trying to save the boot on a serviceable rod, etc.
P.S. Never damage the hex nuts on the rods. Their size, thread pitch is pretty much a factory OEM item.
