Near the battery in an '81 633 is a 1.5" square aluminum resistor box with a tab sticking up off the back side, with a hole in the tab. This little box with wires plugged into the bottom must use a sheet metal screw to attach it someplace.
Against the inside fender ? Anyway, the wires won't let it attach just anyplace, and I've not found any holes in either the '78 or '81, or any engine bay photos, to hope you can help.
Right now it's just flopped between the battery and the black plastic headlight
backing cover.

I can't think of what you are talking off the top of my head, but if you could grab a snapshot of the location/ wires you are talking about, I can take an identical picture on my car.
I'll take a look tomorrow and try to get pictures of my car-- hopefully euro and US won't be different in this case.
woody6 may also have an idea regarding these wires.

You can if you have the image hosted somewhere. I couldn't find any box like you were describing.
Would it be anywhere in these pictures??

Yes, it's a resistor box w/red, green, ground wires plugged into the bottom, with a tab for screwing to the inside fender or ?
In the area of the battery (photo) as posted.

For posting pics you can use
http://imgur.com/ it's free and no BS. I don't even know how they make their money, but it works for me. I think it goes away after 3 months if no one clicks on it, but some pay sites go away too.

Is it the box to the left of the relay I am pointing to?
I have seen these on post-85 cars, but it is not on my 635CSi or '85 535i. Later cars do have it like our '88 M5.
It can be seen in this overview picture on my e28:
If it's not that, I can't do much without a picture...

That's the auxiliary fuse box offered in later E28, E24, E23 and E30 for installing something like an aftermarket stereo, etc.
