Is there a thread lurking around somewhere with a DIY on valve adjustment? More so for a B28

IIRC there is one on bmwe34.net however that is for a E34

Thanks in advance

Josh

I'm interested too, in case there's something I should look out for with the earlier M30's

I wrote one for the M10 2002s a few years ago.

I wrote one for the 2002 FAQ I cant recall the spec for the M30s adjustment and you would have 2 more cylinders (duh). FYI the editor for the board put in reuse the valve cover gasket thats BS. every once in a while you can get away with it but you know how editors are.

E12 era spec is .010-.012". Later cars such as E28s used .012-.014" Either works, but for the smoothest idle try to get all of them to the exactly the same. Make sure the cam lobes are pointed up, not just not opening the valve, up. It's easy to have it just on the beginning of the ramp, you will have clearance, but be off by a few thousandths and have it be noisy. The feeler gauge should slide thru with some, but not much resistance. Don't overtighten the clamp nut, it's fine thread and strips fairly easily. Firm, not hard. Lastly Merlin is absolutely right about using a new valve cover gasket, always use a new one.

Well... you can always reuse the old one if you like leaks, but every one I've tried to reuse has leaked. Yeah, it's overpriced for what it is, but that's life, replace it if you don't want it to leak.
