Sump/Oil pan differences

I'd intended to use a 528i sump, oil pan as the '79 635 has a sender something on the side I won't be using. Upon comparing the two, the 635 has a considerable rectangular baffle set up in the rear half.

Are M30 oil pans interchangeable ? I.e., are ' 79 to '81 528, 633, 635 sumps works in progress, design wise ?

Hard to imagine only a displacement increase at the same r.p.m. requiring different baffles.

If you are a spirited driver I would think the more baffles the better. But don't know enough about the sump differences and clearance issues to comment on swapping.

Yes, yes and yes. Different, better, somewhat interchangable. I think those E24s had a different oil pump pickup, about a half an inch deeper as that's what the pan was. And you will need that deeper pickup or risk oil starvation. Check P/Ns on the pumps, but I'm pretty sure. E28 era pans are probably even better, but sit lower, a bunch of guys on Mye28 have taken out pans, especially if they're lowered. Some multiple times and that doesn't seem to happen on E12s. Better is a relative term.

I'm not sure what you're trying to do, but here are my experiences:

Installed a euro e24 635csi L-block (either '80 or '81) into my '81 e12 with no change of the oil pan, I just didn't use the oil level sender. This was not a motronic engine.

Installed a later e23 euro motronic engine in my '80 528i, in this case I needed to change the oil pan (it would have interferred with the cross member) and in this case I used an e12 M30 pan and pickup. The original pickup was too long for the e12 oil pan.

So if it was me, I wouldn't bother changing the existing oil pan, it doesn't need the sender plugged into anything to work.

I've got an 83 735i euro engine in my '80 and while the pan hangs lower, no problems hitting the crossmember.
