Transmission fluid level check? I know, I know...

I bought a '79 528iA about three years ago, but just finally got it on the road. A lot of work was done to it in another state, so I wasn't able to visually see that it was actually done (trusting my dad on this one).

I've got a factory workshop manual, and it says to check the fluid at operating temp with the car idling in Park. I follow all of that, and the dipstick still doesn't read anywhere near the lowest indentation. Before I start pouring fluid in there, I have two questions:

1) Will any ATF work?

2) The factory manual specifies different fluid capacities for different pan types - flat and deep. How can I tell which one I have? The difference in capacity is .3 liters.

Thanks in advance, and I'll provide pictures of the car very soon.

Dexron. The basic GM red stuff. Dont sweat about what pan it has, just fill it to the mark.

The 3HP22 while a lowly old 3 speed, is good for what it is, and long lasting. It does like regular fluid changes and even a filter once in a great while.

Thanks, Mike. I can't thank you enough for going out of your way to help me get it on the road. It runs like a champ, albeit a little on the warm side. Can't figure it out, just yet.
