I have an 80 528i and it hasn't been running for four or five years, It needed a clutch so I pulled the transmission and replaced the pilot bearing, clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing,and clutch hoses, master and slave cylinders and about a thousand other things it needed after sitting in the AZ sun!!! It's so hot here the other day I saw 2 trees fighting over a dog!!
Well anyway ! finally got it started and as I drove it about 1/4 mile in slow traffic, I got it up to kind of higher rpm, (not really too high, just where it would feel right to shift it and there is a chatter that goes pretty fast as with the rpms, but coming more from under me than in the front of the car, then let off gas and it goes away and it won't do it just reving it up, have to be under load till you get ready to shift into 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th.
Not sure what it is but I'm still healing up(both physically and mentally) from the first time I had it out....and would rather not have to do it again, although it will be infinitely easier this time around now that i have some metric tools...I was just hoping it would not be so soon.(only drove it 1/2 mile....<sigh>)..... Any ideas I can try before I pull that transmission again will be wonderful news........ probably......<sigh>....LOL Thanks

Since it's RPM related, it suggests it's something that is not driveshaft related, since it only changes by vehicle speed, not engine speed. Look around, but if a clutch is the only thing you did that would be affected by engine speed...

I don't want the liability of answering THAT question! LOL
But seriously, did you go under and check for cracks in the guibo? Check for lots of play in the bearing? Maybe put the trans in neutral and turn the driveshaft by hand to check for obvious friction, binding, or noise? (be sure the car is properly supported, PLEASE!)
Since you say you hadn't driven it in years, all sorts of stuff is liable to be suspect. You got it going with the clutch job, now you've gotta drive it around to see what else has withered.
