How would you rate your car's reliability compared to Japanese cars? I guess it helps if you've owned a Japanese car before but yeah... I just love the styling and performance of Audis and BMW cars but always hear /read about reliability issues. Is this really true?

Well, that's kind of a broad question to ask, especially on a discussion board for 30+ year-old cars.
All 30-year old cars are inherently "unreliable" because of age.
The Japanese cars I've owned (mostly Nissans and Infinitis) I would characterize as being more reliable than their German counterparts under less-than-ideal maintenance conditions. Parts were expensive, and it was not always easy to fix them.
The German cars I've owned, if maintained as intended by Klaus, Hermann, and Gunther, were more reliable than my Japanese cars, parts are cheaper, and they have generally been easier to work on. However, if you're dealing with a German car that has an iffy maintenance history, all bets are off.
This assumes you do the work yourself. If a dealership is involved, all bets are off, again. I've also found Audis to be generally more tempermental than BMW's. I've also found Mercedes parts to be much more expensive than BMW parts.
My personal experience only; I'm sure others will have other insight.

My Japanese cars have been limited to a 75 Toyota Celica and a 80 Dodge Colt hatchback (Mitsubishi). Both were ok to good, but not great. Different price point to be sure, but neither was in the reliability class of my first E12, a 79 528i with only 197K on it when I got it. However, neither of it's successors has been as reliable as it was.
Again, ok to good, but not great. They, or at least their reputation has improved since then. Not being overly impressed with the cars, though both had their points, and being impressed with BMWs, I haven't strayed since.
