I just replaced the starter and ignition switch on my 81 528i and it will start when the key is fully depressed but dies immediately when the key is released. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
thanks much
528i start won't run

If it ran before the repairs, my Sherlock guess is the gremlin will be in those two areas.
Proper starter wiring, probably good if it starts. From messing around with the ignition switch myself, it's neither quick nor easy. Read the tech info about the proper positioning of the switch in relation to the locking mechanism during assembly.

Check to see if you have power at the ballast resistor by the coil. You should have 12V with the ignition on and somewhat less after it goes thru the resistor with the coil in place. It also gets an additional input from the starter so it gets a full 12V (or whatever cranking voltage is) for better starting.
