Compressing anti-roll bar bushings

With a little effort I have my anti-roll bar out in the front and I am replacing the bushings. The new bushings are each a bit taller than the old ones I took out, obviously because they are not worn and compressed like the old ones. However, when stacking them up on the tall bolt, the end of the bolt doesn't stick out enough to get the nut back on. It looks like I need a spring compressor or something of the sort to compress them enough for a nut to fit on the end. What do you guys use to do this?

Try this. Go to the hardware store and find a bolt with the same thread pitch, but longer. Take a pair of Vise Grips, and pull the two halves together some. Use the longer bolt to get the two halves to the point where you can get one original bolt threaded. Then back out the longer bolt and stick in the other original bolt.

This looks like it might help, but I don't understand "pull the two halves together some." What two halves?
