Speaker depth

Post by Luke »

Anyone know how deep the 4x6 speakers can be to fit in the rear shelf and the front doors with the original speaker covers?

Not sure exactly but plan on cutting to make room for the magnet(s) on any decent speakers.

I wish I could remember. I did some good Polk 4x6s up front and components in the rear. I'm guessing your car has the 4x6s in the rear instead of the bigger premium housings?

Polk and Blaupunkt make some shallow 4x6's that are 50 watt RMS.

The bigger premium housings? You mean aftermarket or can we fit bigger ones in?

99% sure this is what I used for the front speakers. Looks like the price has come way down too.

My '81 has the rear speaker housings similar to what you find in an E28 that let's you use a component system with a 5.25" speaker and 1" tweeter. I wonder if the rear deck will accommodate the newer housing without modification.

Paging Kohler... I bet he knows.

This is what I am referring to. Would be a MAJOR upgrade if you could use them. I've got a small Fosgate amp mounted to the rear seatback in the trunk, the rear components and the front 4x6s, no serious bass but great quality sound. What more can you ask for?!

What are those rear speakers rated for? And do your Polks fit with the original grill?

OK, I see, you can use those housings and get a nice 5.25 inch speaker in, I think I will go that route. Thanks!

I wish someone would chime in and verify they fit the E12 shelf. Not sure why they wouldn't, but who knows.

The polks I have fit without issue. Surprisingly.

The E12 shelf is the same as E28, so they do in fact fit.

Strange, the front of my 76 528 has round (what look to be) 6" speakers with a factory 'pioneer' grill.

What do your front trims look like?
