misfire at idle, failing CA smog help

my 79 528i has a slight misfire at idle causing it to have high HC (260ppm, max allowed is 220)

car otherwise has a steady idle, good cap n rotor/wires.

just looking for some ideas of where i should start.
the early nineties called. they want their awesome back

thank you, but i'm aware of the basics. i am hoping for something more specific to E12s with L-Jet.

Is it a miss or a hunting idle? The latter is what it should be, not smooth. On a 528i if you have a miss it is probably a component problem, ignition parts. And you didn't mention what the biggest troubleshooting tool says, the O2 sensor.
